Is your central air conditioner failing to chill your house at the setting you set on the thermostat? If this is the case, you're undoubtedly irritated and ready to hire a professional to fix your air conditioner.
However, before you do, consider some of our short troubleshooting recommendations. If your air conditioner isn't working, try to see if:
- Your thermostat is turned on.
- Your air filter is clogged up.
- Your outside unit is filthy.
- The circuit breaker in your home has tripped.
- Set your thermostat to AUTO (as shown below) so that air only comes out of your vents when the air conditioner is cooling.
- If your filter is filthy, as seen in the picture below on the right, it's time to replace it with a new one.
- Remove any dirt and use a garden hose to carefully clean the condenser fins. If you use a strong stream, you risk damaging the condenser fins, which enable airflow to cool the refrigerant.
- Check your breaker box to determine whether the breaker for the outside unit has tripped. Turn it on if it hasn't already. Do not reset it if it trips again. This indicates that there is a more serious electrical issue that will need the services of a specialist.
- Check coolant levels and pressure to make sure your system is running at its best.
- Issues with power
- Problems with the thermostat
- Filter that is clogged
- The accumulation of ice
- Drainage clog
- A compressor that is filthy
- Switch for condensate airflow
- Refrigerant levels are low.
